Keep mosquitoes out of your yard

With heavy rain - which we have been consistently experiencing in Massachusetts - comes an abundance of mosquitoes. There are a few simple ways to minimize you and your family’s exposure to these pests.

Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Especially after it rains, it is important to survey your property for containers such as pots and buckets and empty them. Remember to clean out your gutters regularly. When outside, wear loose, light-colored clothing that covers the skin to help keep mosquitoes from biting. Mosquitoes tend to gravitate to air pockets created by plants during daylight hours. Keeping vegetation on your property trimmed and frequently mowing the lawn can help reduce the mosquito population.

Suggest that your neighbors take these preventative steps as well, so your whole neighborhood can enjoy warm summer evenings!

Why Are Children More Vulnerable to Pesticides?

Children are not mini-adults. They have much more skin surface for their size and take in more breaths per minute than adults. At the same level of exposure, they will absorb more into their bodies..
Children do not have mature defense systems against toxic chemicals. Recent studies show unacceptable levels of exposure to infants and children from pesticide use in the home, on pets, on lawns and in gardens — even when used legally and following the instructions on the label.
Children are much more likely to have direct contact with residues on contaminated surfaces such as carpets, pets, lawns, furniture etc. They are much more likely to be wearing less clothing, be barefoot, fall down, and put things in their mouths. Studies show that toys that were not in the room at the time when pesticides were applied, are contaminated from residues that remain in the room.

Co-founders Trevor Nelson and Brian Whittemore opened a new Pure® location in Chatham, MA. This branch of the organic tick and mosquito control company is managed by Rory Nickerson and services Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. Based in Sudbury, this is the second Pure® location in Massachusetts, with others throughout the Northeastern and Central United States.

Ticks are a persistent problem in Cape Cod. According to the CDC, Barnstable and Dukes are two of the highest-risk counties for Lyme disease in Massachusetts. The incidence of Lyme disease on Cape Cod is twice as high as the state average, and in Martha’s Vineyard it is nearly five times as high. Over half of the cases of Babesiosis, another tick-borne illness, reported in Massachusetts were in Barnstable and Dukes counties in 2011.

Nickerson is a 12th generation native of Chatham. He attended Chatham High School and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. With 20 years of freshwater fishing experience in the area, he is an expert in the local environment, allowing him to provide key knowledge in the prevention of mosquito and tick-borne illness.

How can you prevent mosquitoes this summer?

In Massachusetts, mosquito larvae start hatching as early as the end of February. In addition to signing up for Pure mosquito services, there are a few things you can do now to prevent a summer infestation.

Identify anywhere on your property – and your neighbors’ properties – where standing water can accumulate. Dispose of any standing water already present, and remove all objects (such as buckets) that could fill up in the rain. Clean out your gutters and be sure they do not clog during the rainy months of spring.

Manage plant life on and near your property. The American Mosquito Control Association warns that adult mosquitoes prefer to rest on vegetation, especially weeds. Keep your gardens under control and mow lawns frequently. Pure Mosquito Solutions organic property spray will keep your yard free of mosquitoes without the use of toxic pesticides.

Get ready for warm weather by taking preventative steps to avoid mosquitoes and enjoy those summer evenings!

Proscuitto Wrapped stuffed figs with Burrata and Arugula

Ingredients:
8 fresh ripe figs
6-8 oz of burrata cheese
16 leaves of arugula lettuce
16 pieces of prosciutto

Method:
Wash figs and cut in half. Cut burrata into pieces large enough yet small enough (like tablespoon size) to fit on top of a half a fig. Check the width of the prosciutto slices. If they are double the width of the fig, or simply two wide for the fig, cut it in half length wise.

Next build the stuffed fig. Place a piece of arugula on top of fig, trim if necessary so the leaf doesn’t hang over side of fig too much. Spoon cut burrata on top of arugula. Wrap fig with prosciutto, and secure with toothpick if necessary. Serve immediately.
